As some of the Hurst team were in an exam until 3pm, it was agreed that the college would bat first.
The opening batsmen were put under early pressure by the Martlets bowlers Jamie Hutchings and Rob Noble. Hutchings struck first having Best caught at cover. Unfortunately Noble could not continue bowling due to a side strain, which was a shame as he had bowled well, conceding five runs from three overs.
Will Wingfield-Digby was brought into the attack and bowled with great control, pitching up and swinging the ball away. With Mark Trubshaw bowling at the other end the college found it hard to break away but wickets were hard to come by.
Jens Richardson, a candidate, bowled his off spin with great accuracy under pressure, conceding only 23 runs from seven overs at the death.
At the close of innings Hurst were 169 for seven from their 40 overs.
J Hutchings 2-36-7
W Wingfield-Digby 2-30-8
M Trubshaw 1-38-8
J Richardson 0-23-7
With a long batting line-up we felt confident we could pass the target but the college openers showed incredible accuracy and made it very difficult for the Martlets to make a good start.
At 37 for three it was not looking good but Richardson and Fairfax batted well and with some good batting to come we were positive. Wickets kept falling, however, and with no-one getting a big score our efforts were forlorn.
The Martlets were all out for 149.
T Fairfax 35
J Richardson 24
Needless to say the game was played in a competitive but friendly spirit and again goes to show what high standard Hurst plays.
