The Martlets were entertained by Lady Mary Mumford’s XI at Arundel Castle on Sunday 16 August.
The Martlets lost the toss and were inserted on a pitch that offered some assistance to the new ball. Despite the early loss of Ludlow, the Martlets battled against some accurate bowling to be only 2 down by lunch with the score on 120. Murray and Hunt starred with excellent half centuries. However, they perished soon after their personal landmarks and the Martlets limped to 189-9 before Rebbets repaired matters with a quick fire 22 to allow Martlets skipper, Chadburn to declare with the score on 222-8.
In reply, Lady Mary’s XI stumbled with both Howard and Carter back in the pavilion before the score was 40. Rebbets bowled excellently, picking up both wickets and Smith was also penetrating but without luck. The Martlets turned to spin and shortly after tea Rebbets grassed a sharp chance art mid-wicket off the bowling of Chadburn. Sadly the Martlets were made to pay as both Cowdrey M (56 no) and Cowdrey R (125 no) survived the early pressure to navigate Lady Mary’s team home with only 2 overs to spare.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and the Martlets fought manfully until the bitter end. Next year perhaps…
