Sussex Martlets (171 all out in 47 overs; Sam Carter 57, Jano Moller 59; J Betts 4-28) lost to Lancing Rovers (174-8; J Betts 49) by two wickets
A run of Martlets victories against the ever-hospitable Rovers came to an end in a narrow loss. Some muscular bowling from Rovers’ opener Ballamy made a ruin of the Martlets top order (incidentally bringing our opener Jens Richardson’s average in this fixture down to the high hundreds). Damage was half repaired with middle-order half centuries from Jano Moller and the skipper, and some swash and buckle from Derek Horsham and Paul Walker in the tail took us to a below par 171 all out.
We chipped away at a strong Rovers batting line-up (under the eye of recent Lancing alumnus Mason Crane, fresh from his England T20 debut), Josh Burrows talking the bowling palm with a typically intelligent and probing use of the new ball. The young Joel Eaton gave us a sniff at the death with two late wickets, but the Rovers sneaked home by two wickets.
