A brief match report from John Ashworth
Brighton College won the toss and batted all the way to 196 all out in 55 overs. The Martlets never quite got going in reply (no batsman scored more than 29) before we were all out for 122. Having analysed this at great length, I conclude that being older than the schoolboys, we were all struggling to deal with the heartbreaking news of Barbara Windsor’s battle with dementia (what if she forgets her bra size?).
Freano summed it up best ‘We’re making them look good, lads. It’s just net bowling’.
Luckily, we live in an age where it’s not possible to lose or fail, instead create opportunities to engage in improvement programmes engaging all stakeholders. And focus on the positives, of which there were many:
1. Jordan Shaw – bowled at least a yard quicker than I’ve ever seen.
2. Boots (Obaida Qazi, Ifield) – amazing young keeper.
3. George Read – superb all-round performance (ball, fielding (2 x run-outs), bat).
4. Greg Iago – seam bowling opening with Jordan (we forgot he could bowl).
5. Johnny Heaven – captaining (so I could faff around with MM things).
6. Dan Smith – league-accuracy offies.
7. Arundel – ever wonderful track – and *new* caterers! Hurrah!
8. The ECB didn’t send us any non-playing celebrities for marketing purposes.
So it’s Martlets 0, Schoolboys 2 so far this season. Chance to make amends against Ardingly College next Thursday. In the meantime we’d better engage in those improvement programmes and get back in the nets.
Oh. And Babs. It’s 34D. Who knew?
