Sussex Martlets in low scoring win in the sun
Yet again the Yellowhammers vs Sussex Martlets on The Head at Tonbridge School did not fail to produce another excellent game of cricket on Monday. Two strong sides playing on a very hot day, hottest of the year to date (at the time), with drinks every 40 minutes!
The manager lost the toss but fortunately was asked to bat much to the delight of his team. With no fewer than five premier league cricketers, two ex-professionals and a few ex-premier league players the stage was set against an always friendly and competitive Yellowhammers XI. Dan Arms and David Twine opened the batting putting on 45 before Cristian Davies (76) and Ben Twine (24) put on the highest partnership of the match (68). Will Adkin was run out with ball barely touching the bowlers flailing foot on his follow through from a drive from Cristian. Usually a ground where 300 has played 300 with ease the Martlets stumbled their way to 190 all out before half way, which seemed to be a long way short of the usual par.
Ben Twine bowled a superb spell from the pavilion end taking four wickets before tea for 12 runs and finished with figures of 10-3-24-4. He was backed up by James Brehaut from the other end followed by Dan Arms (7-2-28-4) who took some vital wickets as the Yellowhammers got to tea with the score 45-7. The Martlets tried to take the last three wickets quickly after tea with accurate bowling from Mark Trubshaw, Derek Horsham and Will Adkin but resistance came from Yellowhammers skipper, Ed Hyde, who batted brilliantly for 68 but was eventually the last man to fall as the Yellowhammers reached 150 all out.
Thanks to the umpires and scorers as always and everyone who played and made this annual game another one to remember!
