Josh Fisher’s run-a-ball century set up a thumping victory for the Sussex Martlets over a second-string Brighton College side.
After the Martlets won the toss and batted despite the damp conditions, Fisher, the Kiwi overseas player at Acton CC in the Middlesex League, smashed 10 fours and four sixes on his way to 115. He was particularly strong over midwicket and took a liking to a College bowling attack that was considerably less threatening than in recent seasons.
With minor contributions all down the batting order, skipper Josh Burrows was confident in declaring at 232 for seven after 45 overs.
The start of the College innings was briefly delayed while the Martlets sought medical attention for Guy Forster, who was too unwell to take the field. Fortunately for the club, the College were never in a position to take advantage of the reduced number of fielders.
Steve Harman took a wicket with the very first ball of the innings and bowled with high pace and no little accuracy to finish with three for 14 from seven overs, having dismissed three of the top four for single-figure scores. Offspinner Joe Pratt took three for 24 as the College staggered to 133 all out in 31.3 overs.
With the weather rapidly improving, victory by 99 runs was complete by 5pm, allowing for a pleasant afternoon in the pub.
