Match Report
Trepidation was the word of the day, not for the opposition the Band of Brothers, our friends from Kent, but for the weather. For days in advance of this fixture, the forecast was gloomy and on the day of the fixture, heavy rain was forecast throughout the anticipated play in the afternoon. As can so often be the case, one looks in the wrong direction.
After resounding victories over the Band of Brothers, first two fixtures, one at West Sussex Golf Club and the second at the glorious Royal St Georges, expectations were high from The Martlets contingent awaiting their foes from Kent. Unbeknown to The Martlets, the Band of Brothers had packed their side with a number of non-card carrying members including Paul Downton, until recently the Director of Cricket at Kent County Cricket Club and prior to that Managing Director of England Cricket. The usual suspects such as Tony Monteuuis were in full force along with other regulars including Andrew Brice their Match Manager. Reports are that most matches were closely contested. One Martlets pairing who went down 5 and 4, observed that their opponents played par golf. The rest of the matches went very much to the wire with results on either the penultimate or final hole. Victory went to the Band of Brothers in a reversal of the previous two matches, with them heading home to Kent with a 4 against 1 match result in their favour. The day was much enjoyed and great complements were paid to West Sussex Golf Club, for both the hospitality and the quality of the course. The addition of the wine being provided by The Martlets was well received. Stuart Ritchie : Match Manager |
