Taking first use of a stodgy pitch on a sunny day, Martlets were indebted to Mike Murray, Rob Walker and Julian Barr to ensure we reached a defendable score, in spite of some glacial over rates from the school. We then made rapid inroads after tea, reducing the opposition to 50-odd for five, before some spirited resistance combined with some forgettable catching and squandered run-out opportunities allowed the boys back into the match. Just when it seemed that Mike Murray and Tim Peters had bowled us to a well-timed victory, the school’s last pairing proved to be its most implacable and they knocked off the required with some ease, Martlets thereby contriving to lose a game in which we had held victory within touching distance throughout.
