YMCA 198
Sussex Martlets 158 Marcus Campopiano 40
– Martlets lost by 40 runs Another 40 over game played on this occasion at Claremont Road, Sandyford. Once again the Martlets lost the toss but the YMCA lost their first wicket for 28; the second wicket put on an impressive 75 and it looked at that point that we would be chasing a large total. However we bowled and fielded well once again and YMCA ended their innings on 198 all out in 38 overs. Tony Alexander (44) and Nick Seager started strongly with some powerful hitting but we lost wickets at regular intervals with only Marcus Campopiano (40) and Adam Scott (22) showing that the target could still be within range. It wasn’t to be, alas, and the Martlets were all out for 158 in the 37th over with the Ireland captain of yesteryear, Alan Lewis, taking the final wicket watched by one of Ireland’s stars of today, Trent Johnson, who also plays for YMCA.
In general we bowled and fielded very well indeed but in the last two games it became apparent that in making full use of Dublin’s nocturnal facilities our batting performances displayed excessive exuberance the day after! We played quality sides and in general performed very well with some entertaining cricket. The Head’s report might have read – a very good term but just failed to realise their full potential! It would be unfair to talk about individuals as the team ethos on this trip was so strong. Suffice it to say that the blend of youth and experience was about right and much fun was had on the field, as well as off it.
