Martlets vs Warwickshire Pilgrims
Date: 29 Jun 2014
Venue: Eastbourne College Memorial Ground
Time/Result: Win
Match Manager: Charles Davies
Umpire: Ron Pateman
Scorer: Nigel Smith
The Martlets arrived in a most disorganised state. Those few members who seemed less hungover engaged in the necessary pleasantries with the other team. On paper the side was rather unbalanced: too many bowlers but not enough (my fellow match managers will know what I mean). We chose to bowl first in the 40 over match: this seemed sensible given the ‘clear’ discrepancy in quality between the sides. As it happened, (Guest ) Milo Gough was nothing short of a revelation with ball in hand, picking up early wickets which gave the depleted Martlets eleven every hope of pulling off an unlikely victory.
In the end, it was a dominant century from Adam Davies, displaying his inexhaustible range of shots, which ensured the Martlets defied all the odds and overcame a seasoned Birmingham League outfit. In the successful chase of 240, George Martin changed the momentum of the game with a swashbuckling fifty which might well come to define his Martlets career. Congratulations are to be passed to the eleven who turned out, however I should warn against complacency since the Pilgrims seem the sort of team who never let lighting strike twice.
