Subterfuge afoot in the shadow of the looming Lancing Chapel. The groundsman had deliberately-on-purpose covered the wrong pitch, resulting in a rather important toss over a mottled, damp and green surface. The captain called wrongly and the Martlets were duly inserted. Our spiffing line-up featured the return of the Scarlet Pimpernel of Sussex Cricket, James Cruickshank. James now lives in London and works in Lidgates, that butchers in Notting Hill where you go in for a lamb chop and they force you to take out a small mortgage to cover the grotesque cost. James’ strokeplay has not been adversely affected by the bulk of his new cleaver-wielding muscles, and in twain with Adam Davies he brought the Martlets to an excellent total of 249 for seven on the unlovely wicket. Josh Burrows led our bowling attack manfully, yielding place to the spin duo of Joe Waylett and Dave Mann, before returning to clean up some tail enders. Some mighty biffing from loyal Rover Josef Salameh had brought Lancing within an ace of a win, but with 9 wickets down and with the Rovers six short of victory, honours were even.
