Founder Members

The club was founded in 1905 as the Hove Long Vacation Club. The name was changed to Sussex Martlets in 1907.

There were eight founder members. Age at the time in brackets.

Reverend Arnold Carr (29). Curate Marden, Kent. Due shortly to transfer to St Patrick’s, Hove. Club’s first president.

Hugh Collis (age unknown). Club’s first secretary. Served as Captain in the Norfolk Regiment during the war, which he did not survive.

Arthur Conan Doyle (45). Author and doctor.

Geoffrey Davison-Brown (36). Founder and headmaster of Cottesmore School, Hove. Future club president.

Frank Gresson (37). Headmaster of The Grange School in Crowborough. Ex-Sussex cricketer. Future club president.

William Heasman (42). Doctor. Ex-Sussex cricketer.

Percy Latham (32). Schoolmaster at Haileybury School. Current Sussex cricketer.

Arthur Somerset (49). Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace. Current MCC and Sussex cricketer. Future club president.
