Sussex Martlets v Christ’s Hospital 1st XI
at Christ’s Hospital on Thursday 22nd June 2023
Members of the Sussex Martlets assembled at the 1st XI cricket pitch for their annual game against Christ’s Hospital. The 10 Martlets present were augmented by two U16s from CH allowing the match manager to observe proceedings from the pavilion throughout the day.
As is traditional, the Sussex Martlets won the toss and elected to bat. Veteran Sam Carter and Martlets Junior Oscar Warmington opened up to face Merton and Silver who both opened with maidens. Warmington was the first to fall in the third over to Merton out LBW for no runs. Disappointment was written large over Oscar’s face. Dilshan de Silva and Michael Loveday were the next to bat but similarly fell for few runs as did Sam Carter. The runs picked up somewhat with the introduction of the match manager’s son Matthew Ritchie who scored 22 but it was particularly Om Khot with a very classy 77 and candidate Josh Riddell with a bludgeoned 61 who took the Martlets total to 201 at the declaration.
The Martlets opened the bowling with Oscar Warmington. It was not long before Oscar took his first wicket in revenge for being ducked, and went on to claim 5 scalps. Wickets fell regularly throughout the afternoon until CH were all out for 143 runs, ironically their innings coming to an end with Sam Carter bowling a single ball and Noah Langham claiming a run-out.
The fixture against Christ’s Hospital is longstanding and the school are one of our most generous hosts each year. Grateful thanks go to the Director of Sport and Cricket, Dave Messenger, and also the umpires on the day, Bryan Tomalin for the Martlets, and the scorers, Roger Lusted likewise for the Martlets.
