All,
Below match report for O40s v Cuckfield on Wednesday. Sorry it’s late, mad week at work..
Cuckfield O50s 170-9 from 35 overs
Martlets O40s 174-5 from 30 overs
As Paul Walker observed, it’s always baking hot at Cuckfield!
At the toss the Cuckfield skipper suggested 35 overs not 40 and my decision to agree was proved the right one when I lost the toss again.
Dave Christmas opened up for us swinging the ball in beautifully and Jeremy McGahan at the other end immediately found his line and length as he usually does.
A lot of familiar faces in the Cuckfield side none less than Hennock opening the batting with panache. At the other end though Kurikose began a 4 over campaign to run himself out which he eventually managed when Simon Shivnarain buzzed the ball right over the stumps leaving him looking bemused half way up the wicket.
On a warm day our openers took a blow at 4 overs each and we brought on Steve Fuller on debut and D.Horsham who had on this occasion only missed the first 2 or 3 overs.
Steve and Degs proved to be the pick of the bowlers with 3-31 and 2-23 respectively. Pick of the catches was Guy Medley’s grab on the mid-wicket boundary.
Champagne moment goes to Paul Walker with his tremendous direct hit from deep fine leg to run out Tree who proved somewhat reluctant to uproot himself when the finger went up.
Our chase was led off by opening stalwart Michael Loveday (16) and Simon Warrender who showed his class by cruising to his retirement at 35 without giving the bowlers a sniff.
Dan Jackson on debut added a good looking 20 with Shiv at 4 also retiring on 39 having played the most exciting and fluent innings of the day.
Christmas added 15 and Derek 3 before I got to stand at the other end and admire Paul Walker’s growing confidence and class as he guided us home with 31no batting at 7.
We haven’t played all that much this season so far and this was more like it. A great day, a great win and a super venue. `Already looking forward to this one next year.
Phil
