I’m pretty sure that if you go back and read every match report I’ve done from this fixture it starts with ‘It’s always hot in Cuckfield’. No change. Lovely day lovely place.
Jeremy Crampton the Cuckfield skipper let me do whatever I wanted which I thought was big of him and got straight back in the shade to enjoy watching Loveday and Boulter (sounds like a 1980s American cop show but now our nailed on opening partnership).
Over 40s player of the year Loveday was on fire and made it comfortably to his retirement at 40 ably supported by an endless stream of Boulter singles.
The other notable performance with the bat was Tom Whyte on debut who also reached his 40. In the end we were probably fortunate that the rest of us managed to get out and let Michael come back in to reach his 50 and push us on to what we felt should be a comfortable 221.
I kind of was comfortable as we ripped through the first 5 for 19! After that things changed somewhat as Dawson and Prickett started to take a fancy to us. Dawson chipped one behind for 28 and then Prickett reached his 40 only to be immediately bowled by Lack thus meaning that there was no threat of either of them returning.
All over surely!
No, Mother Cricket having noted Crampton’s toss-less generosity then allowed him to smash us all over the park for 10 overs or so to the point where Cuckfield were probably favourites.
In the end though, one massive, shoulder dislocating swing too many and Paul Walker removed his middle stump for 83 and then it was over.
Great opposition, great ground, great day out.
