Match Report: Sussex Martlets vs Emeriti – Thursday, 8th August at Arundel Castle
On Thursday, 8th August, cricket fans gathered at the picturesque Arundel Castle for the much-anticipated match between Sussex Martlets and Emeriti. The historic venue, renowned for its stunning backdrop, set the stage for what was expected to be an exciting contest. However, the match was unfortunately curtailed by rain, leaving both teams frustrated as the game was abandoned halfway through.
Sussex Martlets, batting first, made the most of the conditions early on, putting together a formidable total of 243/4 before declaring their innings. The highlight of their innings was a brilliant century from Ben Whelpton. Whelpton, playing with confidence and flair, scored a magnificent 107 off 103 balls. His innings was a blend of elegance and power, featuring well-timed strokes all around the ground. Whelpton’s century was the cornerstone of Sussex Martlets’ innings and demonstrated his ability to dominate the bowling attack.
Freddie Ferro provided valuable support at the other end, contributing a composed 50. Ferro’s knock was crucial in building the foundation for the team’s total, as he played with patience and determination, allowing Whelpton to take on the bowlers. Together, they constructed a vital partnership that put Sussex Martlets in a strong position.
As the innings progressed, Jordan Shaw injected momentum with a blistering 43 off just 27 balls. Shaw’s aggressive approach paid off, as he dispatched the ball to all parts of the ground, leaving the Emeriti bowlers with little respite. His quickfire innings ensured that Sussex Martlets finished their innings on a high, adding valuable runs in quick time.
With the declaration at 243/4, Sussex Martlets looked to press their advantage as the match progressed. However, the weather had other plans. Persistent rain showers began to fall over Arundel Castle, eventually forcing the umpires to call off the match. Despite several attempts to resume play, the conditions remained unplayable, and the match was abandoned.
The abandonment was a disappointing end to what had been a promising start for Sussex Martlets. Nevertheless, the team can take pride in their batting performance, with standout contributions from Whelpton, Ferro, and Shaw. The beautiful setting of Arundel Castle, combined with the high-quality cricket on display and lovely lunch and tea food, ensured that the day was not entirely without its highlights.
