On a batting friendly pitch Lady Mary Mumford’s  X1 chose to bat and the two left handers , Ed Towner and Ben Fulton exploited the conditions at a run a ball. The two put on 209 for the first wicket and Fulton retired at lunch on 110 (106 balls). Towner went onto 103 and Mike Krause was superbly caught by Deacon at long off for 51 at which point Lady Mary’s skipper generously declared on 288-3 from 51 overs.

At 74-3 with Crabtree , Murray and Deacon out cheaply Lady Mary’s XI were in control but some wayward bowling resulted in 55 extras and a partnership of 80 for the fourth wicket beween Jason Oates (61) and David Robertshaw (36) tilted the balance and 132 runs were required when the last hour commenced. George Martin made a useful 26 but two wickets in two balls put the score at 189-7. A match winning partnership of 95 between Darren McDonald (44) and Dan Smith (45*) nearly took Martlets to the winning post . With two runs needed McDonald was caught at slip leaving Derek Horsham to score the winning runs with a thick edge to the third man boundary. Ben Fulton took 3-32.
