Martlets vs Lancing College
Date: 4 May 2010
Venue: Lancing College
Time/Result: Loss
Match Manager: Paul Lack
Umpire: Les Newcombe
Scorer:
Lancing College 241 – 6
Sussex Martlets 122
On a very cold but dry day Lancing won the toss and elected to bat in a DECLARATION game! As the last two years have produced very exciting draws a close game was anticipated.
Shaun Ashfield and Andrew Cantrell opened up and both bowled well. After 32 overs the school had 125 for 2 but the expected runs did not materialise as the slow bowlers Swampy Allum and Paul Lack restricted the next 20 overs to 52 runs. Nick Hayday kept suberbly as usual.
Unfortunately Richard Davies the ex Warwickshire player and school coach has retired this year and there was no one to remind the boys that it was a DECLARATION game! After 64 overs and the score at 241 for 6 the Martlets openers Ben Ferns and Willie Boone, having lost the will to live after approximately 4.5 hours and close to tea decided that an honourable draw in a maximum of 35 to 40 overs was all that was achievable.
Unfortunately after 5 LBWs and Stuart Ritchie clubbing a valiant double figure score Martlets capitulated to 122 all out and retreated to the pub.
Perhaps this is the new form of LIMITED overs games!
Many thanks to Midge for scoring both books, our hosts for an excellent lunch and to all of the Martlets who stood in sub zero temperatures as the wind chill up the Adur Valley would have tested even Captain Scott after 64 overs!
