Martlets vs Lancing College
Date: 3 May 2011
Venue: Lancing College
Time/Result: Win
Match Manager: Paul Lack
Umpire: Barry Peay
Scorer:
Sussex Martlets 199 – 7, Torquil Dean 83
Lancing College 103, Derek Horsham 9 – 36
On a bright sunny morning skipper Paul Lack won the toss and elected to bat in a 100 over declaration match. Openers Nigel Angus 34 and Adrian Jones 15 had a steady start before Torquil Deacon 83 Will Rydon 13 Greg West 10 and Mike Murray 28no. allowed Marlets to declare on 199 for 7. Lancing bowled and fielded very well with Roberts 3 for 20 and Betts 3 for 54 being the leading wicket takers. A 14 year old leg spinner Crane bowled 16 overs 1 for 64 and was unlucky not to get more wickets. We will have to watch him over the next 4 seasons.
Lancing set off well with Betts 36 helping to reach 59 for 1 before the injured Derek Horsham reluctantly accepted the captain’s challenge to prove he couldn’t bowl! After his first 5 wickets he suggested he wouldn’t risk the injury anymore unless he got another wicket. Derek ended up with the superb figures of 13 overs 3 maidens 9 for 36 and yes the match bowl wasn’t even prised from him after the game! We all hope he continues to play as a batsman and bowls through his injuries if required! Greg West was on top form behind the stumps for his first game of the season.
Many thanks go to the home team,Chris Crowe and new coach Raj Maru(ex Hants) as well as the catering team for an excellent lunch and tea. Midge scored for both sides and recorded the first win of the season by 106 runs.
The umpires also had an excellent match and Barry’s wit, being as dry as the pitch, tested our bowlers to the limit as usual. Our thanks go to them all for helping to make a very enjoyable day.
