Match Report
On an early Autumn day, the Sussex Martlets gathered early at Rye Golf Club for their annual fixture. Selection for the Martlets side had been on a first come first served basis, and a number of new players made the side, noting particularly the debut of Harry Moorat, one of our cricketers and indeed a centurion for both the Junior Martlets and the main section of the Sussex Martlets.
Pairings for both the morning and afternoon had been pre-selected by both Martlets Match Manager Stuart Ritchie and Rye Match Manager Martin Pryke. We were billeted to play the Jubilee course first and so off we went to the far side of the old course to play the second course at Rye. That course in itself is charming and presents a different challenge to the old course, a challenge the Martlets rose to leading 4-3 at lunch. Harveys was the preferred form of re-hydration for lunch ahead of our visit to the legendary dining room at Rye Golf Club. Wine was provided by the Martlets and greatly appreciated by the players of Rye Golf Club. Lunch was, as is typical, of an excellent standard and replete, the Martlets ventured out to play the old course. With the final match coming down the 18th, the match was in the balance with a win to the Martlets meaning an overall win on the day, or a halved match meaning the match would be tied. And so it was, one of our debutants left his final put half an inch short of the hole resulting in his game being halved and the match overall being tied. Arguments that that was effectively a win to the Martlets against the home advantage of our hosts naturally fell on deaf ears. It was a great days golf much enjoyed by all participating with each Match Manager receiving notes of congratulations from their sides. The return match next year is much anticipated.
