Martlets won the toss and elected to bat. Stragglers won by 4 wkts
On a beautiful, warm August day Adrian Ford, captaining the Martlets, took advantage of what looked like a goodish, dry, flat track by batting first. The Stragglers bowled tidily and upset the Martlets’ rhythm early on by opening with a leggie. Batting discipline was clearly influenced by England’s recent performances and the Martlets went into lunch at 106-6. Kirk Steel held the side together with a well judged 70 and, helped by Ford and Burrows in the late order, a rally produced a reasonable target for the Martlet bowlers. The Stragglers’ batting was a class above in the top order but a fighting Martlet response with (mostly) tight bowling from Scott, Hole, Burrows and Bicket saw wickets being claimed at a steady rate. Despite some excellent, competitive fielding particularly in the latter part of the Stragglers’ innings, the target was achieved with 4 wickets in hand. Some recompense for this very disappointing loss was provided by glorious weather, a wonderful setting, engaging company, the Griffin Inn waitresses and the odd pint of Harveys!
