A perfect day at Arundel saw a fairly young Junior Martlets side take the field against the senior team having won the toss and deciding to take the chasing option. The opening seam attack of James Newland and Tom Chamberlain found the edge but bowled with little luck on their side. Brandon Troak took two wickets in a fine spell while 14 year old Joe Ludlow bowled 15 overs of off spin and eventually took a wicket after catches had failed stick. Louis Ramsey and Seb Marlow were economical after lunch. The ground fielding was impressive throughout the innings.
Greg Wisdom and Marcus Campopiano made a steady start and navigated their way to the tea interval. They took the opening stand to 67 and at this stage Marcus and Joe Waylett tried to raise the pace before Joe fell LBW. Seb Marlow kept MarcusCampopiano company for some time while he attacked the bowling and reached a fine hundred. It was an excellent performance by someone who still has two years to go at the junior level. Some wickets fell as the Juniors tried to attack the total but the required rate was out of reach. It was, however, a very encouraging performance overall.
All but one of the players will be available again next season, which help to make prospects look good for the future.
As the Junior Martlet season ends I would like to thank Greg Wisdom for his sympathetic captaincy, where he has tried successfully to involve all his players fully in each game.
Thanks too to Chris Snell who has been a wise counsellor for my first season and to Nick Creed and Colin Oliver-Redgate, in particular, for finding players in moments of extremis. It has been great fun and tremendous to meet some really committed young cricketers
