Jacob Smith bowled admirably, with only seven fielders and a wicketkeeper to support him, to finish with three wickets for 71 runs in 22 overs as the Forty Club batted methodically towards their declaration at 250 for five. With two men missing, the Martlets did well to contain their opponents during a 55-over stint in the field.
Even with only nine men, a flat wicket at The Saffrons meant that the total was within range. A second-wicket partnership of 47 between Michael Loveday and P Marchant raised hopes but with wickets thereafter falling at regular intervals, a draw began to look like an honourable escape. S De Bellder, however, had different ideas and struck a 43-ball 67 to show it. Sadly De Bellder was the last man out (only the eighth wicket), caught off the bowling of S Setters, who finished with four for 91.
The Martlets lost by 30 runs, the lack of a complete team proving a little too much to overcome.
