Yellowhammers (294 in 49.1 overs; MaGregor 89; B Davies 4-74) lost to Sussex Martlets (296 for five in 47 overs; T Cummins 76, A Davies 70*, B Pullan 54) by five wickets
On the hottest day of the year so far a Sussex Martlets side, with blend of youth and experience, beat the Yellowhammers at Tonbridge School in an excellent game.
Having lost the toss and been asked to take the field, Ben Davies bowled superbly without just reward until the end of the innings where he finally finished with four wickets for his efforts. Robin Freen’s leg spin brought about two key wickets and Eastbourne College schoolboys, Walter Huchu (1st XI) and Joe Pocklington (U15), bowled superbly for one and two wickets respectively on a typically batting friendly track and a shot boundary on one side. Bowling out the Yellowhammers for 294 was a feat in itself, as was the manager opening the bowling for the first time in two years!
Giles Robinson, the Eastbourne College 1st XI captain, was strangled down leg side for 28 but put on an excellent opening stand with Ben Pullan who finished on 54. Adam Davies (70*) and Tim Cummins (76) came to the crease and proceeded to push the score along swiftly both scoring their fifties at better than a run a ball. Mark Trubshaw’s 43 off 27 balls meant a swift finish to the game with six overs to spare.
A great day against excellent opposition with fantastic catering and hospitality on one of the best wickets and without question, one of the best matches every year on the Martlet calendar. I would like to thank those who made themselves available at the last minute due to legitimate drop outs, particularly Robin Freen and Ben Pullan who agreed to play on the morning of the game.
